I suppose the reasoning is that if there's no imminent threat to the hardware, we savvy cheapskate hams will wait until the seller has given up hope & then swoop in for the kill. :-)

I've seen surplus gear advertised on ebay from a local company listed with a fairly high opening bid and with the warning, "Will be scrapped if not sold this time." Okay, so why not sell it for the scrap price of a few bucks rather than take revenge on enthusiasts?
