Well if we're honest, the predominant reason mil surplus radios were of
interest to hams was because it provided a cheap basis for conversion to
something else. Very few if any cared about historical preservation,
as the number of hacks and holes in a typical piece of surplus gear
attests. The only exceptions were those that no one could figure out
what do do with, like the 225-390 MHz Navy RDR receiver that sat on top
of a cabinet in my high school physics lab. It was so uninspiring that
we only mustered the effort to take it down once, and then just
scratched our heads over it.
