It's really up to the user, Wayne. In aircraft, there was a mock-up
stage where prospective locations with receivers, transmitters, etc.
were made in the airframe, and control boxes and the like were then
placed wherever made the best sense from a usability standpoint.
Then all the supporting cables were laid out and measured. Any user
needs to do the same thing with their setup. A tuning cable may be
as short as a foot, or as long as 30 feet. (Okay, hopefully not
that long, but it was in some of the larger patrol aircraft.)
Shorter is better because there is more torsional twist in a longer
cable, making accurate frequency setting more difficult. I've found
less than two to three feet to be acceptable.
