Hi

If this is a basic “no regulation” supply ( = transformer driving diodes into a load +
(maybe) a cap …) the addition of a diode to isolate this or that does nothing useful.

The isolation diode removes the possibility of the power supply sensing the delivered voltage, and throws away power – 0.7 V x your current drain.
I recommend using a relay whose coil is energised when the power supply is turned on. Energise the coil from the supply’s mains switch, not the 24 V output. Gets around the problem when the mains fails, too.

It is so simple, just a transformer, rectifier and filter.
Add an isolation diode between supply and battery.
