In the 50's TACAN was initially developed for the Navy. TACAN and DME channels were paired such that if you tuned your ARN-14 to a VOR channel, it would/could set the TACAN or DME unit to the proper co-located ground station. By the late 50's, the ARN-21 was the standard military airborne TACAN unit. General aviation used a VOR receiver for azimuth data and a DME-only transponder for slant range to the VOR.  So, the ARN-14 control box could select a DME channel. Probably that feature was provided for air carrier avionics suites. That said, aircraft I am intimate with had a seperate TACAN control box. The ARN-14/ARN-12/ARN-18
provided ILS function, primarily.

Hello,
A bit off topic but I have a question regarding and old ILS/VOR radio navigation system I'm working on.
It is composed of the ARN-12 Marker, ARN-14 VOR and the ARN-18 ILS receivers.
Studying the schematics I noticed that the control box of the ARN-14 C-996A has provisions for the frequency selection of a DME (Distance Measuring Equipment)

The ARN-14 is from the 1950's and I cannot find any DME reference for that time period
Does anyone know what kind the set was used for this function?
