The “dark material “ beneath the equipment may be the shock mounts the equipment was attached to. The only shock mounts I’ve seen for either the SCR-274-N or the AN/ARC-5 are painted with a black, krinkle finish paint ( some may have been unpainted, but I haven’t seen them ). The shock mounts are hard to find since, when the aircraft were scrapped, while it was easy to pull the radios and the racks, pulling the shock mounts was a pain in the butt, so most shock mounts were scrapped with the aircraft. Same thing with the backing plates for the avionics control boxes. 

Sure would be nice if some enterprising person took up making some of that stuff.

As mentioned on this NG earlier, I want to build mine so it's more vertical as it's taking up a lot of horizontal space in its present "configuration"  -- the 2 TX and 3 RX are side by side.

What is the dark material that the units rest on ?   Does it have insulation properties?   Both of my decks have metal sheeting over them as I find that greatly helps grounding concerns.
