Hi Steve - I have one of those plastic ones too...It works.
Reminds me of a Mantra we frequently resorted to at "work":
"Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk and then cut it with an axe".....

My good and better calipers are kept in the tool chest.  Another of my "they're too nice to use everyday" situations.

And I don't own any "best" calipers.  I'm too poor.
