Don't forget to add USAAF (US Army Air Forces) to the mix, which may be what the gentleman was recalling since that was the official title from 1941 to 1947.

Memory confabulation is simply a part of the aging process - look it up.  Give the old folks a break.  For those who haven't yet experienced it, your time is coming...I can guarantee it.

Perhaps.  Confusing "Air Corp" and "Air Force" nearly a century

You must judge as you see fit, of course.  Likely there were
other "cues" that led to your conclusion; you're not one
for "snap judgments."   There are liars, of course, but
once an accusation is made, there's no "un-ringing the bell,"
even if the person is later proven sincere.  I've been on the
receiving end of such an unfounded judgment- so cautious
about doing it myself.

USAF didn't exist as a branch of the armed forces until 1947.
I would think one would remember what branch they served in if they were actually there!
