I happened to obtain a copy of the Bell X-1A/B/D Pilots handbook today.  As photos I have seen of the X-1 show, it was equipped with ARC-5 VHF equipment consisting of an R-28 receiver, an T-23 transmitter, and an MD-7 modulator.

It was also equipped with an APN-60 radar transponder operating in S-Band.

The X-1A was a development of the original X-1 that broke the sound barrier, with a stretched fuselage and with a more conventional cockpit canopy.
