14 years working with “Oppy’s Fire Crackers” here. If the piece has radium paint, I urge you not to attempt removing that overcoat. You will contaminate your tools, contaminate your environment and contaminate yourself as certain as sunrise. Removing the overcoat cannot be isolated from removing the radium.
That takes special equipment and special skill, which none of us have.
The proper way to “safe”radium paint is to overcoat it with clear, non-Chinese paint to fix it in place. You have no worries about exposure or contamination then unless you sleep with the thing.
