Hue,
That's a very interesting observation regarding the TBM comms. Some time
ago I researched the comm setup of the infamous Flight 19 exercise from
NAS Ft. Lauderdale, FL, on December 5, 1945, which went (and still is)
missing. The story is elaborated at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_19. From what I managed to
establish is that all five a/c of that doomed Flight were fitted with
the ATC plus ARB combo preset to 4805 kHz, plus the aux R-26/ARC-5 or
ARA. Additionally, they were also fitted with the VHF AM sets, but the
documents on the case mentioned voice comms on HF, not on VHF. That
being said, it can be concluded that the range HF voice comms was
limited on that very day, and ultimately lost when the weather
deteriorated.
