I rely mostly on photographic evidence, certainly more than some official USN table of allowances to figure out the most likely radio configuration for any specific aircraft I’m putting together a radio for. An allowance table is a good start, but I’ve found radios in allowance tables that were not adapted by the armed forces listed as standard, and some that had would have been problematic to use in standard allowance tables ( for instance, radios that required a 12 volt dc power source in a C-47. By 1942, C-47 aircraft were all being built with 24 volt dc being standard in the aircraft ). Museums are also very good sources of information, and most are very happy to answer inquiries. From what I’ve found, there were some variations of equipment that look to be more driven by what was probably available more than anything else in regards to some types of equipment. Happen now also. Equipment issued ilo ( In Lu Of ) happens.
