The ONLY time I ever had UPS pack and ship an item, a large, OLD audio amp for a carrilon 
which used a pair of 803 tubes, they packed it so poorly it arrived damaged and I had to 
cover the damages. They wouldn't.

Never again.

I HAVE found that (using my own packing) FedEx GROUND ended up being the safest and 
"fast enough" shipping for things like an R-390, RAL-7, SRR, etc. 

The FedEx GROUND truck drives right past our front door once a day.

I would build a box out of 3/4 inch plywood, and line it with 2" blue foam insulation, form-fit to 
the radio. I would also pay to have the empty box sent back to me.

I never had any further problem with shipping damage.

One reciptient never sent my box back to me, though, so I had to build another one.
