I've written on other reflectors that our navy ought to resurrect the use of the sextant due to the potential for GPS spoofing. While I'm at it, I'd also encourage reinstating HF into other comms used by our armed forces. You never know when a satellite jammer or killer might rear its ugly head.

I bought a plastic sextant at a thrift store, but donated it cuz i realized i had too many projects already. Your note reminded me of my interest in those machines.
The “real” ones, the ones in their own wooden boxes, those are really cool looking machines. I have a couple Boy Scout signal mirrors and i get much more fun from
using them ( occasionally ) than i spent for them.
I still remember seeing in the Fort Huachuca AZ museum, about 6 decades ago, the 'Heliograph' used during the campaign against Geronimo. Also they had the
WW1 crystal radio. Pretty neat stuff. I read recently that this museum is one of many set to close soon. I hope these fine machines go into some prominent display
elsewhere.
