Wayne, that has been my experience with the photographs of Navy radio installations during WW2 also.

The ARN-83 aka 51Y-4 is a beautiful receiver. I have one here with the
original pancake antenna, bearing indicator and control head. The tuning
uses synchro technology. The original receiver mount has a built in 400Hz
inverter required for the tuning and indicator. The used to go for a song
on eBay. Available is also the 51Y-7, with odometer type digital tuning.
The 51Y-7 followed up the Y-4, but personally, I prefer the older Y-4. I
hear that older 51Y-3 is also a great receiver. Any old type bearing (ARC)
indicator works. The antenna is about 25" by 15" and 1" think. It can be
mounted on aluminum plate. There is no need top orient the antenna to the
North, if a control transformer is placed between the receiver and the
bearing indicator. I noticed that my ground installation seems to be
sensitive to lightning disturbances than airborne installation. In flight
close by storms can make an ADF unusable for navigation purposes.

Subject: [ARC5] Foreign NDB's and PBY Radios

I have noted that usually aircraft ADF sets have a BFO, supposedly because
many foreign NDB's use CW rather than AM transmissions. I just recently
picked up the receiver and control box for a ARN-83 ADF but have not yet
looked into it

The later military ADF sets went up to 3MHZ . By the way I still have a
Cessna ADF system for sale if anyone wants one.

As for USN aircraft, I have a rather extensive collection of pilot's manuals
and usually the Navy manuals do not describe the radios but say to refer to
the manuals for whatever equipment is installed.
