I may sound incredible, but here in Arizona, linseed oil is considered by many (including me) to be a great protectant for wood, and painted metal surfaces.  It withstands the sun, and it is good on old military vehicles that are painted with alkyd enamel, renews it for a few years at a time.  And it is cheap, in a relative sense.  Just wipe it on with a rag.  No skill necessary!

Boiled linseed oil works wonders for wrinkles finish paint . After washing it  dry it and wipe down with the oil. Afrwe a few minutes wipe. Off the excess with a dry cloth and let it dry.  It will dry in a couple of hours but look wet, >like fresh paint.  Lubricating oil never dries and will collect dust. Linseed oil will not and does feel oily.

Sounds like maybe a real good tip. I will have to try it out first on something small, like a control box. 
Years ago, someone told me 'Armorall' makes the old rigs look great. Then someone else told me, only do this if you will never ever want to repaint the item.
