My couple of cents - in addition to Dave's JB Weld method, I've soldered a few split nuts back together from similar caps used in BC-348's using a similar "hold in alignment with vice grips" then solder. (was it a BC-348? my memory stinks!) The nuts and shafts were plated brass, IIRC.
My success rate was about two out of three. The next time I come across these type of broken caps, I'm using Dave's plastic method! Seems much easier and successful!
INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: I made up some little PC boards that would mount a modern screwdriver-adjustable cap in the space formerly occupied by one of the broken-nut caps. (even included some spots for parallel / series capacitors if "tweaking" was needed. Worked okay, but still, far more of a pain than Dave's method.
thanks much,
ben
