We had this objection come up early in the idea.
If you're going to use the prog oscillator or a
crystal with a linear output device to an antenna,
such as a QRP rig, filtering might be needed
either way.
Most Crystal oscillators put out non-linear pulses
unless they have a tank in the output of the
oscillator to smooth them.
Tuned circuits later in the chain take care of
any problems with the prog oscillators,
same as they do with crystals.
I have used them many times, have observed the
outputs with modern test equipment, and found
no problems.
Each to their own tastes, of course.
