[ARC5] A crystal Substitute

Following up on something Dave Stinson mentioned some time ago, there is a
very detailed article in the latest Electric Radio Magazine concerning how
the author substituted a very modren "synthetic crystal" (my words for it)
using a ProgRock2 device for the badly-needed crystals in a transmitter he
was restoring..

>From the looks of this, it appears to be the near-perfect solution for
those of us who need crystals which are no longer being made to repair or
restore our old equipment.

As I remember it, David suggested this device several months ago.

The article in question covers the use of it in the restorationi of a
Heathkit HX-1681 CW transmitter. The result was fairly easily implemented
and was, in my opinion, better and more accurate than any set of crystals
could have been.

Although YMMV, I suggest that anyone who needs crystals in order to
restore any piece of gear would do very well to read this article and to
investigate the ProgRock2 sold for $18 by QRP Labs. And physically, the
device is almost the same size as an HC-6 crystal. It can output a clean
RF signal from about 3 kHz through 200 MHz, and can provide up to 8
separate outputs.
