Mark, did i miss something? There are easily accessed photos of US Navy PBY with ATB. The ATB was the pilot's voice radio.
In fact one of the ATBs i owned came from retired Navy PBY pilot. The other NIB one came from G&G. I don't know where
now i got the control box, as G&G had none, apparently, or they would have mentioned it to me. I declined to buy the
dynamotor - big mistake, in retrospect !
( Aside: any of you remember that fellow who wanted to buy my ATB for the PBY on display at Whidby Island, Washington?
And i declined to sell it to him, and he got all bent out of shape over the refusal? I didn't want it to go #1 to a static display,
and #2 to a plane stored OUTSIDE in the Pac. NW. ! Anyway the better of my ATBs, the unissued one, went to a ham, and
the control box too, so it likely will see life again. That makes me happier. )
The RUGF was the radioman's turf. Some PBY used instead the ART-13 / BC-348 pair. I don't know what the criteria were for
the decision to keep the RUGF or go with Army equipment. Some decades back Chet Wisner told me he flew as radio op in a
PBY on Caribbean patrol from East Coast USA, and his PBY had the Army equipment. I have a photo of him typing away on a
nice looking typewriter on the PBY, but unfortunately no other equipment is visible.
It occurred to me the other night, i had never seen or heard of any Navy PBY with this combo, ATC ( ART-13 ) with 3 RAX
receivers, except in one book photo.
Pete Peterson told me that in '46 or '47 he flew radio op on PBY that was given to Philippine Navy. It still had the RUGF. Also
a fellow in Bellevue WA told me he saw RUGF in PBY many years after the war. Why some had newer better gear i have no
idea, except "maybe" "critical" role called for latest equipment.
