The little 5 channel VHF transmitters were used as backup transmitters in the UH-1 but originally were part of a VHF comm system for light aircraft in the 1940's. I have four of them, as well as matching receivers. You see advertisements for them in late 1940's aviation magazines along with the similar VOR equipment. I have been told they were also used in the early U-2 aircraft and the South Carolina Military Museum has a OH-47 on display with that equipment installed. It is clear to me that the equipment was designed for light aircraft and was adopted as an emergency transmitter for the UH-1 because it was available and no doubt many were surplus to other requirements. Also some light military aircraft used the TV-10 or CV-431/AR, a transverter that enabled the VHF Type 12 equipment to receive UHF military aircraft band signals, with a build-in UHF transmitter.
