As you seem to have found, a key to removing solder is having a hot enough soldering iron.  The 20W/40W ones we use on solid state pretty much don't hack it.  I bought a PRC-made desoldering kit with a solder sucker and it had a really hot iron, but it burned out.  Solder wick only seems to work on circuit boards, and for point to point wiring you need a solder sucker.  For the BC-348 work I bought a 100W iron on ebay and I was surprised to see it has a digital temp control built right into the handle.
