Scott, this reminds me of some years back, around a decade plus. Brad Whiting KD7DGT had a load of surplus avionics which came from some fire bomber company. It was all Bendix and Collins VHF vacuum tube equipment, no ADF or anything really attractive - and worst, NO control boxes. He was going to just take them to a metal recycler but i told him i would be glad to do some preliminaries on them before they went. I loaded the whole hundreds of lbs. load into the back of my company truck. Probably my employer would have been not happy knowing i was doing this. After work i would take a few out of the truck and disassemble them. It took a week or so. The husks went into our own company's metal scrap bin, so it was a case of "all roads led to Rome" anyway. I got a bunch of mod transformers, loads of tubes - some even practical - and various odd crystals, including a bunch of 80 meter AM freqs, but unfortunately those frequencies all ending in odd digits. Most of that stuff i gave away. This project "had to be done", but would i do it again ? No, i think i would pass.
