I’ve always heard something along the line of “ Do you know why the British didn’t invent the radio?…………… because they couldn’t figure out how to make it leak oil.

The context was German pilots complaining about the quality or features
of their radios.  Goering supposedly said "Radios are full of coils.  I
hate coils."
