I have a book somewhere by a British POW who ended up in a camp in Japan, where conditions were harsh but not deadly. They had an easy relationship with the camp guards, but kept getting raided by the Japanese Secret Police, who were convinces the POWs had a secret radio they used to communicate with Gen MacArthur's HQ in the PI. No radio existed, but the guards had to claim it did, lest they incur the wrath of the Secret Police. Then one day they noticed a rather odd looking cloud in the distance; after that, things started happening. The cloud was Nagasaki. The POWs found out that the war was over but they feared being executed by the Japanese extremists. So they told the camp commandant that they had in fact been in communication with MacArthur's HQ using the famous secret radio, and the General had decreed that all weapons in POW camps were to be turned over to the prisoners. They were somewhat astonished when the Japanese did turn over their guns, which were a sorry and decrepit lot of firearms. Some of the POWs then boarded a train and went looking for the Allied forces, being allowed to move freely by the Japanese people, some of whom even apologized for the treatment they had received.
