The GPS has brought great navigation capabilities, but also the loss of some challenges that made pilots better pilots! Before the GPS driven moving maps, it was the pilot job to mentally visualize its position. Sometimes, it could be a challenge. Approaches required 100% focus. With the GPS driven moving maps, situational awareness is a given and no longer a challenge. Regarding NDBs, their maintenance is much more then keeping the transmitter going, the FAA must regularly verify its accuracy by flying an airplane.
Furthermore, after the Cali accident, most airlines do not allow NDB approaches. NDB approaches are fun, but can be dangerous!
Rather than spending money on NDBs, I would like to see an alternative to GPS in place like E-LORAN or something else!
