[ARC5] A crystal or a stable signal source?

I think that the reason that surplus 8 mhz crystals are so common is that they were used in the ARC-3 and related VHF sets and the USAF needed lots of them.

The DoD had stockpiled crystal growing equipment and by the early 1970's PLL circuits had greatly decreased the need for crystals. Some of the surplus growing equipment ended up at our university's engineering department, where they were doing some kind of experiments under a DoD contract.
