Hi
You need to define things a bit to get an answer. Some outfits went in and out of business
during the war. Others split in two. Others merged into a “new” company. Some went through
the paperwork to make crystals, but never actually made any. The most common answer to
the question is “about 120 to 150” actual manufacturers.
Needless to say, as you talked to various folks who worked at or ran these companies, each
had their own definition of what counted. That made pinning down a precise answer more than
a bit difficult.
During WWII, Glavin / Motorola was a major buyer of crystals. They spent a lot of time setting
these little outfits up.

So far I've identified at least 45 companies making these xtals.
