This is evidence that human memory can be tricky.
The distances worked and the difficulty of using
the 451 control box for CW contacts, plus the
keying nature of the 274N makes the
claim suspect, but the most telling is
"... near 2 megacycle..."
While the SCR-287 Liaison set would certainly
work around 2 MC and would easily make the
contacts reported, the SCR-274N bottoms at 3 MC,
and the BC-696 may not have even come on-line
in 1941; it was a late "add-on."
Too early for AN/ARC-5, so I propose the witnesses
had an honest confusion between SCR-274 and SCR-287.
