Only related in regard to "rough AC note":  i was looking at an old 'Shortwave Craft' magazine last night and it had a reader's 
suggestion for a 'code practice oscillator' which used the 60 Hz AC mains as the source of the 'tone'. I don't think that would 
be fun at all to listen to, particularly at high speeds. I recall in grade school enough decades back, Mr. Melton demonstrated
a 'code practice oscillator' built on a wood board, that he was quite proud of. It used a low wattage light bulb, maybe 40 watt
size, and i do not recall if it depended on capacity to the AC mains or heaven forbid, some kind of direct connection.
