One thing to consider:
The people writing these histories are rarely "radio" people.
We've seen many times when one installation in one
vessel or vehicle gets taken to be the only "correct" one.
The WWII Jeep community with it's obsession for the TCS-5
and only the -5 being "authentic" is an example.

IMHO, the system the writer recounted is at least as likely
to have been ATB/ARB as not.  The ATB was scarce but not rare
at that time and is documented in several diverse installations.

If I were betting coffee and donuts, at that time in the war,
I'd probably also bet on the 2-ATA 3-ARA or an early AN/ARC-5,
but if I saw an ATB/ARB, it wouldn't surprise me.
