For smaller loads I use a couple of HP bench power supplies purchased on ebay, 0-40 VDC and 0-50 VDC. The largest one, a HP6002A, is limited to 200W, so for 24 VDC you'll not get more than 8 amps out of it. By the way, if you get one of those the first thing you should do, after looking at the manual, is to remove the Option 001 programmable feature if it is installed and make the required mod to the connector for it to enable the power supply to operate without it. That option uses flexible circuit boards, and after 40 plus years, they are very susceptible to major shorts that will take out the whole unit.

I did salvage a large battery charger, most of which had all but rotted away; the transformer is still intact but I have yet to use it. I also salvaged a big transformer out of large UPS but do not have any info on it and I don't know what it will be good for. And for anyone in Florida the local avionics shop is tossing out a very large DC power supply that might be good for something.

A few years back I built up power supplies and interface boxes for an ARC-114 and an ARC-116. While the 28 VDC power requirements were modest I found that some big stereo transformers I salvaged required some significant electronic efforts to get them to put out around 28VDC at even a few amps. Finally, the motorized scooters and wheel chairs that are so often seen today often use 24-28VDC motors and the discarded battery chargers for them can be useful; I used one to make the ARC-114 power supply.

Happy Labor Day!
