Jack, I hope Mike Morrow posts on this, but I am sure this is a simple misprint. 
I think proofreader corrections in those days were much harder to effect.
But, I was last night looking at a Sony CRF-150 manual, circa 1972, and it listed all the shortwave bands as two digit kHz,
like "49 meter band 5.7 - 6.3 kHz".  You would think someone along the line would have noticed before printing !
