I thought the "multiplication" depended on this equation:

sin(x)*sin(y)=  (cos(x−y)−cos(x+y))/2

But that is merely conjecture on my part.

I thought the multiplication began with x2 signals that gave the sum and
difference frequencies.  Notice that the equation lacks any amplitude, eg
Asin(x) * Bsin(y)
