yeah, but they get old and leaky and so do the filter caps.Worst case scenario is the filter cap shorts and fries the selenium rectifier, causing it to release toxic selenium gas!It's one of the reasons they became obsolete.

Ah, back in the days of my TV/Radio repair business, we had selenium
replacement units. Looked like a selenium, mounted with same hardware but
contained a silicon diode and series resistor. A drop in retrofit. Think
I still have a couple around here. These were for the B+ supply. Have a
couple VOMs that have a selenium for AC measurements, still work fine.
