Good morning,
This discussion has my interest. In 1958 -59 I was a member of an Air
Explorer unit of the Boy Scouts of America. We met at Bakalar AFB,
Columbus, Indiana, the home of the Air Force 434th reserve transport
squadron. They flew C-119's and we got to fly on one. I was a new ham at
the time and recall seeing a BC-348 installed in the radio position on the
plane. I remember tuning it and not hearing anything. I don't know if the
antenna was connected.
As a member of that expl;orer post I also flew to Great Lakes Naval
training center on a 119 for a field trip. Now I am wondering if it was a
Navy 119 at Great Lakes where I saw the BC 348 or if it was on the Air
Force 119. Since the unit in Indiana was a reserve unit, maybe they had
hand-me-down 119's from the Navy. Obviously, I am confused, but curious.
I have written an email to the museum at the airport and asked them. They
are restoring a 119 and their web page has featured photos of our Air
Explorer Post. I hope they can answer my question.
