The contacts are plated onto the sides of the crystal blank. Apparently due to ingress of moisture over the years,
the plating lets loose.
There is this story, one of these groups had a "group buy" of a big lot of these crystals, and members could elect
to buy so many of the crystals. I was one of the eager buyers. I discovered, as had others before me, of the very
high failure rate. I gave away most of mine just to help complete display-only sets of the tank transmitter setups.
I still have a few of "good" freqs, like 500 kHz maybe, for special use, but at present I really don't have a reliable
crystal tester, so the final determination of those can't be done. I know that's not a good excuse. I would be
hesitant to use them in ANY circuit now, knowing the clock is ticking for them. Think about those LF SSB filters that
homebrewers cooked up in the 1950s. I wouldn't bet on their viability at all now.
