[ARC5] 28 volt high-current supplies?

I’ve run series-up 12 v lead acid batts across a number of nominal 24-28 volt DC supplies for over 30 years and never had any problems with battery off-gassing fumes in my well ventilated basement. The off gas rate on a floated fully charged battery is pretty low.
If you are really concerned you could use new technology valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries which have very low off gassing. But they are pricey. I believe the Optimus batts are VRLA. Apparently our 2017 Volvo XC60 came fitted with a VRLA battery. I’ve never gone to the extreme of open circuit on the batts after starting the dyno, I just keep the supply voltage around 28V to prevent overcharging them. My little 10 amp “smart” charger maintains about 14V “float” when a single battery is fully charged.
As far as the noise from the dynamotor, that’s part of the “character” of running a big DY-17A to power an ART-13! If it really gets to you put the DY-17 behind a wall in the next room. At least it only runs while transmitting, unlike a BD-77 for a BC-191 or a PE-73 for a BC-375. Or the dual squirrel cage blower on a T-195! Or a genuine 800 cycle motor generator for a TBW!
