Hi Mike,

Well if we're honest, the predominant reason mil surplus radios were of
interest to hams was because it provided a cheap basis for conversion to
something else.   Very few if any cared about historical preservation,
as the number of hacks and holes in a typical piece of surplus gear
attests.   The only exceptions were those that no one could figure out
what do do with, like the 225-390 MHz Navy RDR receiver that sat on top
of a cabinet in my high school physics lab.  It was so uninspiring that
we only mustered the effort to take it down once, and then just
scratched our heads over it.

Here's a nice example of a minimally-modified ARC-5 receiver in a nice
piece of homebrew gear: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115640810858

This is a known seller, check Other Auctions if you're in the Delaware
area and looking for command set parts radios.
