Yup, the weird old SLRM pilot bulb circuit.  I’ve had my SLRM since my grandfather gave it to me in 1964 when I was 12.  Lost track of how many pilot bulbs I’ve replaced in it over the years.  Not sure if all SLRMs behave this way, but mine has always had a transient current surge through the pilot bulb as the set powers up, that causes the bulb to initially glow brightly and sometimes will pop the bulb filament like a fuse.  I’ve never analyzed exactly what goes on in the associated biasing circuit, but I do know that when the bulb blows, the receiver audio goes dead and the 1629 cat’s eye tube target stops glowing. If the bulb filament survives the current surge it does indeed glow dimly, making the dial hard to read unless there are no lights on in the room. Amazingly enough, most of the tubes in the S/N 1841 SLRM are still the originals.  My grandfather’s brother who passed away in 1960, bought it from Scott’s Manhattan NYC sales agents for $250 in the fall of 1945 just after the war ended.  He was looking for a replacement for a pre-war Scott console, either an All-Wave or a Philharmonjc.  He wasn’t very happy with the SLRM which of course was a much different radio, but I’m glad it ended up with me.  Still use it on 160 80 and 75 meters for both casual vintage CW and a lot for AM QSOs, as well as BC and SWL reception, wonderful rich warm audio.
