Well, it's mostly just me going for "90% accurate and easy"
vs. "100% accurate and a pain in the butt."

I have meters which will tell me I'm getting 20W of carrier
out of a rig when the scope is saying 45w out. That can have
me chasing my tail, which I do often enough without crummy
test gear adding to the freak show.
By the same token, I have another one which will tell me 40W
out when the scope says 45. I can live with that; not enough
to gain to go to all that extra trouble, expense and TIME.

If I key an unmodulated carrier and the scope says 80v PTP,
that's 80/2=40, 40x40=1600, 1600x.01= 16W (assuming 50 Ohm
  non-X load).

If I key the mike and use my cost-free "organic tone source"
(saying "foooooooour" into the mike) and the scope averages
120 V PTP, That's 33W PEP, more or less and close enough
for a shade-tree like me.
