Not so, the Doolittle device consisted of two vibrating reeds side by side that responded to the modulating frequency received from dual overlapping RF beams. If both reeds vibrated at the same level, he would be “on the beam”. He used a radio made by Radio Frequency Labs (RFL) that became Aircraft Radio Corp. in Boonton, NJ.

Looks a lot like one of the instruments Doolittle used in his first blind landing flights in 1927 (I think)

Some months back I queried here about an unknown Bendix meter. No one was able to identify the specific use.
Today, again triaging stuff, I removed the packing from the box. Underneath was a folded single page instruction
on how to use the meter for use in a "beam antenna direction indicator", along with 3 paper, not decal, replacement
face scales for the meter. I think it would be a bunch of work to open the meter and actually place the new scale.
Apparently this instruction and the optional replacement meter faces were supplied by some surplus dealer looking
to move a bunch of these meters by inventing a possible use.
This unknown meter is available free for postage only. If no takers from these groups, will bring it to next hamfest
and put it with other free items.
