Smoking in aircraft:

As a Navy flight student flying the T-28 in 1967, I discovered a trick:  the R-1820 engines used 115/145 avgas, and one preflight step was to release the drain under each wing tank to see if you got fuel or water. 

I discovered that a bit of fuel would fill my lighter for use in flight to fire up my tobacco pipe  (Plug Crumb Cut from the Ehrlich tobacconist in Boston - still in business but that tobacco has changed.)
