I just lucked out and got about 50 or 60 feet of M22759 22 gauge wire, multistranded copper and tin coated, rated to 600V.   It is the equivalent size of about 20 AWG.  The local avioncs shop had a large spool of into turn into a rat's nest and just tossed it out.  I just did what I have been wanting to for some time, removed the clips from some failing leads and soldered them onto some lengths of that wire.

The rubber boots are indeed annoying and alone have rendered any number of those cheap clip leads unusable, aside from the rusting and the poor connections, although it is something of  a race .

By the way, Fair Radio Sales Co has quite a selection of various kinds of alligator clips.  Unfortunately the ready-made alligator clipleads they sell are the typical pressed-on type.
