[ARC5] Wire Gauge sizes

We have been working to rewire my 1946 Ercoupe.  In the process I discovered something that astonished me and may be of interest to others in this group.
 
I assume everyone is familiar with American Wire Gauge sizes?  Well, the current recommended wiring for aircraft of Mil-W-22759.  And the wire gauge sizes used in 22759 are approximately TWO SIZES larger the similarly designated wire sizes in AWG. E.g., a 22759 Size 8 is an AWS Size 6. I ended up buying over $170 in wire that I could not use because it was too large to fit.
