Perhaps.  Confusing "Air Corp" and "Air Force" nearly a century
later seems like something that would be common, given the
fuzzy nature of ancient human memory.

You must judge as you see fit, of course.  Likely there were
other "cues" that led to your conclusion; you're not one
for "snap judgments."   There are liars, of course, but
once an accusation is made, there's no "un-ringing the bell,"
even if the person is later proven sincere.  I've been on the
receiving end of such an unfounded judgment- so cautious
about doing it myself.
