It is a security thing. Lights were used to communicate between
ships and an enemy would have to be directly in between the ships
to be able to intercept the signals sent by light flashes in Morse.

They are also used in airport control towers to communicate with
landing/taxiing/taking off aircraft and also ground crew vehicles.

Subject: [ARC5] Signal Light used on aircraft ?

This is a Navy signal light. It operates off 110 AC via a transformer in the storage case,

or a 6 volt external battery. The bulb is rather low power, spec 6 volt 1 amp. So I'm wondering

if this type was used only ship or shoreside only, or if such was used on aircraft. Or did aircraft

use a light gun that somehow plugged into the 24 volt system?

I have wondered in the past why an aircraft might use a signal light to communicate with ships.

Well, a recent reading told me: to maintain radio silence.

thanks-
