Besides maintaining the NDB at Deer Park, WA airport I at times “chase” NDBs just for entertainment and occasionally compete in contests. I have in the past used my HRO-W and BC-453. More recently a friend set me up with an iCom R-75 (1 Hz tuning steps) with a narrow band filter (7 Hz). It works great but to use it one has to tune to either the USB or LSB where the ID exists. On the HRO I simply tune to the center of the carrier, turn on the BFO and read the ID. I read and understand the ID information is contained in the sidebands. I guess if the R-75 had a BFO I could get the ID without tuning to the side bands (usually about +/- 1000 Hz or +/- 400 Hz (Canada)).
If someone could give me a short tutorial to better my understanding I would appreciate it. Thanks.
