Mike

I pushed the contrast on your photo and it revealed a nice single channel setup resting in the rear seat. Transmitter, receiver, modulator and TR relay. Nice!

That makes sense to me, too, Steve. After all, the radios came from USAAF supply - both Homelite and Eclipse had APU's in the 2,000 watt range. Why not grab one of those little guys? It would eliminate all the conversion effort and makeshift scrounging of transmitter dynamotor, relays, etc... Plus, it would make replacement a drop-in from normal stock. A pair of those batteries like the ones below looks like they would fit under the radio set in the Iran photo. Easy peasy.

I am not seeing the PTO generator so where is the 12 volts coming from? I would guess the jeep has 24 volts in batteries under the radios that are charged with an APU.

The radios may not be ARC-5, SRC-274 or ARA radios. They may be an earlier look-a-like that ran on 12 volts. Either that, or parts were scrounged and radios were heavily modified. As far as meeting AAC limits, that may not have really mattered. These were definitely not built to some factory spec in this application. All that mattered is that they work and fill a mission need.

I could see rewiring the filaments for 12 VDC, but what about the relays? Aren't they all 28 VDC?

Slightly over 10 years ago (June 2011) , there was a mention on this list of a photo of a Jeep with ARC's in the rear deck. At the time, they would have provided a link. Don't know what the link is now... Nobody seems to have brought it up... As a bonus, there's a B-24 in the background.

So, I'm attaching. It's about 89 Kb.
