[ARC5] FW: Jeeps with Radio Equipment

The PTO run generator for the MB only saw prototype use, and was not adopted by the US Army as standard, even for radio Jeep’s. Fords version was the standard for a 12 volt radio Jeep. Some were factory installations, most modifications were done in theatre. Not all radio keeps were modified to 12 volt as most ground forces radios had power supplies for ground forces radios that had a setting to power the radio using the 6 volt electrical system, so there really was no pressing need for the Army to use a PTO operated generator to supply power. The only jeep supplied with a PTO ( which mated up to the rear of a standard jeep transmission) was the GPA Amphibian, and GPA’s were not all that common. The PTO ran the shaft for the GPA Propeller, and a pulley that powered a bilge pump.
Take a closer look at those radios. They are not standard ARC-5 or SCR-274-N.

It would eliminate all the conversion effort and makeshift scrounging of transmitter dynamotor, relays, etc... Plus, it would make replacement a drop-in from normal stock. A pair of those batteries like the ones below looks like they would fit under the radio set in the Iran photo. Easy peasy.

>> The radios may not be ARC-5, SRC-274 or ARA radios. They may be an earlier look-a-like that ran on 12 volts. Either that, or parts were scrounged and radios were heavily modified. As far as meeting AAC limits, that may not have really mattered. These were definitely not built to some factory spec in this application. All that mattered is that they work and fill a mission need.
